Old men squinting at the idiot box
greedily slurp drivel spooned into their agape mouths
by obsequious, oily oafs masquerading as messiahs of information
the young glued to the gaudy light of device
salivate salaciously at studs and sirens
or dream of escaping to the utopian West
the rest go about their routine, mundane existence
lulled into a false sense of felicity
they think not, they care not, they speak not
democracy is nothing but a messy mockery
when the downtrodden know not what freedom is
when the poor and the illiterate can be bought for a bottle
when those elected rule like authoritarians
when the government machinery bulldozes all dissent
the rest go about their routine, mundane existence
lulled into a false sense of felicity
they think not, they care not, they speak not
fed on falsehoods and narrow nationalism
blind to joblessness and rising inflation
jingoist barbarians gleefully run amok
history brazenly rewritten to suit the ruling dispensation
the idea of a nation dealt deathly blows everyday
the rest go about their routine, mundane existence
lulled into a false sense of felicity
they think not, they care not, they speak not
and yet a lone voice here and a courageous fist there
is raised against divisive atrocities and despotism
one day other voices will rise in chorus too
the hard fought freedom is not a fanatic’s fiefdom
this voice will stop not, fear not, relent not.
Written for dVerse poetics. Today’s host, Sanaa, has asked us to take inspiration from the beat poets. Read more about it here.

Me and many more like me…but since we don’t protest vociferously, we become the silent majority overtaken by the noisy minority.

Oh Punam! My mother would have printed this out and put it on her refrigerator!! In fact I think (if it is okay with you) I’d like to print it out and send it to my sister….

We are all, fed, by the government’s, lies on T.V., especially when the stations have their party favorites, which makes it even harder to sit in on the news reports these days.

You captured the indifference of so many with these stellar lines:
lulled into a false sense of felicity
they think not, they care not, they speak not
I am very hopeful of this: one day other voices will rise in chorus too.

Great list of three in your title, Punam, and I like the anonymity of your three old men ā they could be anyone. āIdiot boxā is a great phrase, and the sibilance in āsalivate salaciously at studs and sirensā really does its job. Well done, too, on effective internal rhyme in ādemocracy is nothing but a messy mockeryā. Thank you for the hint of hope in the final lines.

Punam, I agree with every word written here. This is one of those poems that will stay with me for a long time. I used to tackle the madness, nationalism and authoritarian despots on my old blog until I got unsavoury comments by those jingoists you mentioned. It’s sad that most sleep through this. But your poem ends on a wonderful note of optimism and I’d like to add my voice to the chorus of those who fight. Thank you for this.

Nitin, thank you so very much! I do write about these things often and I don’t usually get unsavoury comments because not many people follow my blog. What’s happening in our country sickens me to the core but we can’t give up, can we! Thanks so much for adding your voice.
Please accept my apologies for responding late but with October being the month of festivals, I hardly have time to write.

Alas it seems that democracy has become a show with simple solutions and fake ideology, masking the authoritarian rulers behind a veil of voting bought and paid for with bread and circuses
