In the ever changing kaleidoscope of life
greys crowded out all the vivid hues
colours bled from my luxuriant dreams
leaving them dully monochromed

dizzying joy, quirky warmth and undying passion
were the gifts bestowed on me
I floated dandelion like on the soft breeze of contentment

as a parting gift
the heartbreak that was unexpectedly tossed my way
shattered me beyond repair
closing all doors on me

I gather my fragmented self decisively
I acclimatise myself to the cloudy climes
getting ready to take a plunge
into the uncertain ocean of living again
learning to dance with the rains

these days storms sustain my resilient heart.

My self or not

I believed I knew myself
every line mapped, every vein marked
the bumps and the dips, all accounted for
burnished and buffed for the world to see
then you came into my life
the “I” you showed me
is so different
I look into the mirror again
and trace the contours of my face
trying to find what you see in me
your fingertips, as they trail over my soul,
reveal facets unknown
your lingering gaze
unravelling all my resolves
your words peep into my future
showing me a different vista
the person I see in the mirror now is not me,
it hurts that I’ve lived with this stranger for so long
as I stare at my likeness dispassionately
I see dark corners deftly disguised
the luminosity is also just reflected glory
I now notice a shoddily tied bundle of fake positivity
the inklings of chaos cleverly concealed
everything shifting and sliding like sand
a reflection so distorted that I cringe
the one who gazes at me at present
with narrowed eyes from behind the mirror
smiles at my bewilderment and disappears
with a sigh I embark on the journey of self discovery
this time to acknowledge my true self.

As I stumble again over my tangled shoelaces
wondrous memories light up the canvas of youth
time is fluid and my mind lucid
as I ramble through the lanes of past
a hint of the fragrance of carefree laughter
causes a lump in my throat that refuses to go
the freaky four they called us behind our back
our strangeness, the elephant in the room
nobody had the courage to address
we were unstoppable
no kakorrhaphiophobia, no feeling of insufficiency
my clumsiness never an issue
secure in each others’ quaintness
world warriors we were
then fate spun a whirlwind so intense
scattered across the globe we lie
the magnet of uniqueness keeping us aligned
I wipe my tears with a sigh hoping to see them before I die.

Globe trotting

The journey that was planned

to the last meticulous detail

round the world

to finally meet you

is unquestionably not just improbable now

but impossible too!

Yet who can understand

the longings of a single-minded heart

the idiot

keeps checking the distance

on the globe!

Hush, it tells the brimming eyes

we will continue to play the game

till the time is right

when hands stop tracing

the outlines of continents

lips open to register their protest

only to be told

Shhh! It’s your turn now!
