Lies masquerading as truth

overshadowing the truth
stealthily, slinky shadows stalk

the reality that is diminished
by distortion looming large

the jaded glory of veracity
fades
in the razzle-dazzle of swirling chaos of make believe

a fool and her folly can ne’er be separated
she’s blinded by the warped reflection in the false mirror.

Written for Sadje’s wdys, Eugi’s moonwashed weekly prompt, David’s W3 and dVerse OLN mini prompt.

W3 POW, Ben Tonkin says, “From free verse to haiku…
This ‘folly’, be up to you!
Can’t wait to read how you do.
Your inspiration is ‘folly’.”

Grace, our host at dVerse, says “the optional mini-prompt is to write a poem about the painting or use the title of the art work:  The False Mirror, or both.” I have used the title.

  1. That image works so well with your poem. I get weary of “bigger and better” “new and improved” etc., especially when they are an illusion that grows into insignificance.

  2. Those shadows loom large and often do overtake reality as we cling desperately to our follies. I like the way you’ve taken the funhouse image and given it depth. (K)

  3. The alliteration in the first stanza really sets a tone. Sadly, some have no choice but to live in the shadows of reality, at no folly of their own, but then there are others…..
