A white winter hymn

(From Farmers’ Almanac)

I tell a winter’s tale of a much awaited
long December and a longer January
I dream of the biting, moaning wind
ice cold and stiff feet-hands, blush pink nose.

When lazy, silvery ponderous puffs pervade
and heavy, grey, lumbering smoke collides with them
a hazy shade of winter are days
but I’ve got my love to keep me warm!

Since exquisite, feathery flakes do elude me
I leave no soggy, muddy footprints in the snow
I cannot sing of cold weather blues
‘my love is winter’ is my anthem!

Written for dVerse poetics. Today’s host, Lillian, has shared a list of winter songs and asked us to use atleast two in our verse. The songs are listed below. I have used those in italics.

A Hazy Shade of Winter (Simon and Garfunkel)
A Long December (Counting Crows)
A Winter’s Tale (Queen — and also The Moody Blues)
Cold Weather Blues (Muddy Waters)
Footprints in the Snow (Bill Monroe)
If We Make It Through December (Merle Haggard)
I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm (Billie Holiday)
Let It Go (Idina Menzel)
Love Like Winter (AFI)
My Love Is Winter (The Smashing Pumpkins Oceania)
Roses from Snow (Emmylou Harris)
The Hounds of Winter (Sting)
Trapped Under Ice (Metallica)
When It’s Cold, I’d Like to Die (Moby)
Winter Things (Ariana Grande)
White Winter Hymnal (Fleet Foxes)

Also written for Eugi’s moonwashed musings weekly prompt.

I have also used words from Jane’s random word generator.

    1. I totally get it, Jane. Even though I stay in the north, the temperatures rarely go below 4 degree celsius. It does snow in the hills though. I guess we all yearn for what we don’t have. 🙂

      1. The average December temperature here (daytime) is about 14°C and 3°C at night. But it’s a lot colder than that at present and will be for the next five days or so. I can do without snow too!

      2. Here the daytime weather at present is in twenties, and right in the middle of the city it feels warmer. It is only at the fag end of December and early January that the temperatures dip, there is heavy fog and no sunlight but that spell is intermittent.

      1. We are well, Punam. ❤ Thank you for asking. Our internet was down for a week, and we are dealing with repairing hidden damage from the hurricane. Insurance will cover a new roof and other repairs when we find a roofer who can do the work before spring. Many cannot do the job for 4-6 months.

All the best to you and your family!

      2. Oh, my! I did not know you had faced so many problems. I am glad the damages will be covered by insurance. Spring is a long way away. Take care and keep us posted. Much love to you. ❤️
        Thanks for your wishes.

  1. Great imagery….you worked the prompt well! These lines, I am especially smitten with:
“I dream of the biting, moaning wind
ice cold and stiff feet-hands, blush pink nose.” I can feel the wind and stiffness and cold in your words!

  2. This is so dreamy!! Sigh especially love this part; “When lazy, silvery ponderous puffs pervade and heavy, grey, lumbering smoke collides with them a hazy shade of winter are days but I’ve got my love to keep me warm!” 😀

      1. most do, the advantage of living in the Himalayas was that our summers weren’t too bad … going down to Kangra to shop was like hitting a heatwave! Also meant we had snow and unbearable cold in winter …
