Time

Time, O Time, do wait!
it cannot be curtains yet
some chapters are still left
the body may be but a mound of sand
ravaged by time’s waves
but the heart smoulders still
with many a pain to feel alive.

Time, O Time, do wait!
don’t be waylaid by the sagging shoulders
nor by papery wrinkled skin
I do gasp for breath sometimes
as they bunch in my rheumy chest
but ties of blood do help me up
their cheery voices call out to me
I think not it’s time yet

Time, O Time, don’t wait any longer!
I think I have lingered enough
death refuses to meet my eye
wavering in and out of clouds of fogginess
I hang heavy on everyone’s time
promise me an encore in another lifetime
’tis time to finally rest.

  1. Aging takes its toll until our time runs out. Some days, we wish there was more life to live, and other days we realize our time has come to rest. Beautifully written piece and thank you for joining in.

  2. Punam this takes me back to my Great grandmother – she outlived all her family but my grandmother. All her friends had passed. She bemoaned that it wasn’t fair that she should live when so many younger had died. It was as if she felt guilty for living. When she died, she did so peacefully knowing it was her time… You’ve written a beautiful poem that explores the desire to remain and the pull toward death.

    1. Thanks so much, Val. I visited my mom recently and somehow felt she no longer wants to live any longer…seemed tired of living. Always appreciate your encouraging words.

  3. I’ve known a few family and friends that can be reflected in you verse. Some not as old as others… but still being thankful for the time they have had and then ready….

  4. amazingly sensitive creativity sis … I’m guessing unless it’s a sudden accident we usually have a sense of impending demise a few days before. But best to say and do what we need to now just in case 🙂
