Spell (NaPoWriMo) Early-bird prompt

I tighten the muffler of your memories around my neck
warmth seeps sweetly into my sluggish sinews
As your gurgling laughter cascades gently over me
I live another day, so close yet so far from you
My enchantress, the spell you cast on me
won’t let me die, but pray, how do I live without you!

For those of you who want to get a jump on things (either because it’s already April 1 where you are or, who knows, maybe you’re just a glutton for poetry!), we’ve got a special early-bird prompt, based on the poetry of Emily Dickinson.

Dickinson is known for her elliptical style, unusual word choices, and mordant sense of humor. Over the past year, I’ve experimented with writing poems based on, or responding to, various lines from her poems. Today, I’d like to challenge you to do the same! Here are a few lines of Dickinson’s that might appeal to you (the slashes indicate line breaks):

  • “Forever might be short”
  • The absence of the Witch does not / Invalidate the spell”
  • “If to be ‘Elder’ – mean most pain – / I’m old enough, today”
  • “The second half of joy / Is shorter than the first”
  • “To be a Flower, is profound / Responsibilty

  1. Great Punam, the spell cast will last forever, if it’s sweet enough as that conjured here – so best to enjoy the ride…

  2. A poem a day is like pulling a plow without a mule; probably my ego though. I write both for myself and the feedback. When I post unattached poems on my blog, it rarely garners any comments. I’ve been doing it for 12 years, and have 1,400,000 page views. I do applaud your efforts though.

  3. Well… as always I learn so much here, just off to look up elliptical style….!
Your poem was at once beautiful, and very mysterious…there were lines that need dwelling into properly…especially the closing ones. Such good verse.

    1. Ain, I am also learning new things everyday. Honesty, I didn’t try for elliptical style (way beyond my limiter poetic skills) but I did enjoy writing to the prompt. So glad you enjoyed it. Deeply appreciated.

  4. Oh my gosh…first, for your typically exquisite poem (have you published a book yet, dear heart??); 2nd for notice of NaPoWriMo…which I’ve not participated in (maybe ever)–I was thinking we were starting A-Z Challenge… “I’m so confused…” 🙂 Okay, buck up, Zelda!–be a poet, you can do it! I do LOVE my kindred spirit, Emily D…so between you and her, maybe I can get my mojo goin’! Much love–and strength to you ❤

    1. Dearest Z, there are so many challenges this month, it is so easy to forget a few. Since I enjoy writing poems, I stick to NaPoWriMo.
I so, so look forward to your participation in it!❤️❤️
No, I haven’t published a book, nor do I intend to. Enjoy my poetry for free! 😉😂😎🤭❤️
