Let me hold your tiny hand once again
I want to relive those idyllic days once more
Let us walk down the elusive memory lane
When you were my little angel, oh so pure!
I want to relive those joyous days once more
To fill my pockets with memories of your childhood
When you were my little angel, so very pure
I just can’t believe you are stepping into adulthood!
To fill my pockets with memories of your childhood
Those sun filled days of carefree gurgling laughter
I can’t believe you are stepping into adulthood
My little doll is all grown-up, of age from hereafter.
Those sun filled days of carefree, gurgling laughter
Let me make a gallery of reminisces once again
My little doll is all grown-up, of age from hereafter
My heart is filled with such a sweet pain!
Let’s walk the gallery of reminisces once again
Let’s chase butterflies one more time
My heart is filled with such a sweet pain
Let’s catch sunbeams and hear woods chime.
Let’s chase butterflies one more time
Let me send you off with a heartfelt smile
Let’s catch sunbeams and hear woods chime
Your journey will be long, cover it mile by mile.
Let me send you off with a heartfelt smile
Though melancholy smites my poor heart
Your journey is long, cover it mile by mile
And I will from afar play my part.
Though melancholy smites my poor heart
I cannot but be happy for you
And I will from afar play my part
It is now your life to live and pursue.
I cannot but be happy for you
My dear little angel, oh so pure
It is now your life to live and pursue
But let me hold your hand just once again!

So beautiful and moving, Punam! My eldest son is growing up so fast, and I’m so proud of him, but I do cherish those baby memories 🥰

The nostalgia in this piece flavors each word strongly and beautifully! I love pantoums; their structure lends well to repetition that enhances each of the new lines birthed stanza by stanza. ❤

I too love pantoums, Jaya and their form lends beautifully to verses where one wants to emphasize. Thanks a lot. ❤️

You have perfectly captured the bittersweet point when the child is no longer the child! Written from the parent’s point of view but also with the knowledge of having been the child once before…. Love the Pantoum!

It was my mom’s death anniversary yesterday. I selected a photo of a mother and daughter. Your poem was exactly what I was thinking of writing. Thanks

Yes, you’re very right. Humans often long for the v things they never had and ignore what they do. That’s why I tell my friends how lucky they are to have their mothers till their old age. 💖

Nicely written. It is a mix of sadness and happiness that we are not quite as important in our children’s lives, but the joy it brings to see them become the adults we had hoped they would be!

My eyes were sweating reading this 😢 I felt that “sweet pain” you spoke of. Gorgeous format and such a tear-jerking, eloquently worded poem. “My little doll is all grown-up, of age from hereafter”- When this line repeated, I felt the sweet pain of nostalgia, days gone by all within the blink of an eye. Absolutely ADORED this piece! 👌 Precious 💖 I’m sure, not just mothers, even daughters can relate to your beautiful words…

That is such a beautiful poem, the rhythmic repetition of the pantoum really lends itself to that cycle of children growing up and remembering back to when they were little. I really enjoyed it. 🙂

Oh, I so do love this. Thanks.
So my sink was loaded with dishes,
My wavy hair was a birdy-nest.
But my heart beat faster by the minute and laughter never sounded so sweet.
The best job in the world!!
I got to raise two little boys and am forever changed by my two little boys who are wholesome young men.
The best job in the world!
