Tyranny

Tyranny acquaints us with the deepest despair
despots never stop from repeating their mistakes
trying to subjugate everyone to rank capitulation
using brute power and the machinery of state

Hubris struts around, brazenly fear mongering
reason and righteousness softly tiptoe
in such a gloomy scenario they quietly retire
for the victory of the oppressor is taken as a given

In the darkest of darkness when nothing is visible
in the coldest of winter when frigid winds blow
in the furthest corner where ultimatum pushes
the timorous soul sings in a tremulous voice

Gathering frail courage from note to note
as hesitant other voices join in, haltingly first
the song becomes a rallying cry for the oppressed
soaring up and high beating down all walls.

But the obstinate tyrant refuses to retreat
for drunk on absolute power, he is blind absolutely
bully pulpit misused by bumbling bedlamite
never expecting a fight back as a repercussion of tyranny.

  1. Punam, this is so relatable! It expresses my sentiments exactly! I especially like the alliterative phrase “bumbling bedlamite.” Awesome! I think you just coined it, right? Sounds just as sinister as it is! ❤

    Enjoy your weekend!

  2. Oh Punam! I think I know who this poem is for! It definitely fits the mood and the description of the current state of the USA. While things are better, there is still many “bumbling bedlamites” who need to have repercussions. I love the vocabulary you used here!

  3. Learnt a new word today – bedlamite! Bumbling bedlamite is so going into my regular phrases to use. 🙂
When I read your poignant poems, sometimes, I feel that I lost the ability to feel passionately about so many things…. and here you are making me feel them anew!

      1. let it go, just focus on what’s right in your face .. the healthiest way to stay sane sis 🙂

        share your passion thru verse
but dwelling on it will be a curse 😦

  4. So apt, Punam! What’s frustrating is we elect our leaders based on what we feel to be ethical and honest human beings. Once, they are in office they change and their lies get shoved under the rug way too much. Karma awaits its options. Thank you for the excellent and powerful piece!

  5. I love how you created such a vivid image of resistance gathering strength. As always, well penned! So many wonderful phrasings: “Hubris struts around” “timorous soul sings in a tremulous voice” “bully pulpit misused by bumbling bedlamite”

  6. Something about your writing is so like the story of the song of discord that Melkor sows in The Silmarillion. I somehow never finish this book as life keeps interrupting and I can’t pick up where I left off. Nice writing!
