Sometimes hope dangles by a slim thread
I cling to it tenaciously
But the thread does break at crucial times

Sometimes the truth punches me in the gut
Breathless and beaten, I still get up
But the urge to lay sucker punched is too strong

Sometimes optimism sits timidly at my door
I have to let it in
But pessimism gives it a vicious fight

Sometimes I wonder if it is all worth it
But then I need something to live for
Or do I?

β€œHow far does optimism go?”

    1. For any writer, it is the highest compliment if her/his words resonate with others. But I really wish you never had to go through such a time.
Thanks so much, Mason. Looking forward to better times.

  2. Punam, my friend, please feel no need to respond to this because I know you are taking a much needed break. I just wanted to mention how thought-provoking and relatable I found Sometimes.

Not only could I relate to it on an emotional level — the feeling of sometimes being knocked down by despair is so well described — but it also stimulated a couple thoughts.

First, it put me in mind of the saying, which seems to be especially popular in East Asia (because China, the Koreas, and Japan all claim it as their own), “Get knocked down six times, get up seven.” Given how easy it is for most of us to get knocked down to various degrees in life, that saying has got to be among the world’s most useful, realistic, and encouraging. Of course, the saying isn’t perfect, but what is?

I don’t know whether my second thought applies to many people besides myself, but I have found it is easier to live with low expectations — live with a relative lack of hope — than it is to live without a sense of purpose. I don’t seem to need much hope to be keep going, but I do need a very strong sense of purpose, of mission.

    Just my two cents.

Your poem really struck some chords with me. Thank you so much for it! I hope you are enjoying your break, and will come back whenever you are ready, renewed and fully charged.

      1. So we are. Here in the blogosphere there are very few who read you because they like what you write, most visit for reciprocity or to increase their numbers. Sad truth, but I feel lucky to have met some with whom my ties are beyond the likes. ❀️
