Snatched suddenly from a languid dream
thrown unceremoniously into a living nightmare
raven black darkness engulfs me
its gritty edges leave me bruised and fragmented
the iron chains of helplessness keeping me immobile
predator opinions circle my segmented mind, looking for a weak spot
I can see the skeletons of fantasies lying in diffused despair
trapped within the synapses of time
the eyes forget whether they are open or shut
reality and make- believe teasingly merging
lips twist bitterly maybe to smile or cry
love can often do that.
Maybe we should keep our eyes closed. It’s easier to smile when you don’t see.

Iron chains of helplessness, skeletons of fantasies, raven black darkness,.
You imagery here was so perfect it made this piece frighteningly powerful.

Oh Punam, this is breathtaking. I felt the blurring of dreams and nightmares, of awake and asleep. Your imagery is incredible

Rachel, I am honoured you think so. There is indeed blurring of sleep and wakefulness and all that is in between!

Disturbing poem, Punam. Love is a foul beast sometime. Makes me shiver. Interesting how everyone has a different favourite line. Mine is “predator opinions circle my segmented mind, looking for a weak spot”.

I was speaking to a friend yesterday, Tracy. Confinement can have ugly consequences. I wonder if we will ever be able to quantify the emotional impact of these times!
Thank you for pointing out your favourite line. 🙂

I liked the whole poem, Punam, but particularly that line. I don’t think we will be able to quantify the impact. I don’t think we will see the worst of this mental toll for some time. There will be a lot of love lost, and bad relationships will become toxic with the threat of the virus being used to abuse, don’t you think? So little you can do for your friend must be adding to your stress.

That is what I am worried about, Tracy…emotional and mental toll. I did talk for a long time and shared my silly poems which did make her laugh…at least for a while.
