In the beginning
the serenading surf beckoned him
intermittently
disregarding it
he went about his daily chores
then the sweet song of sirens became insistent
the roar and the quiet of the ocean crashing around him
woke him in the middle of the night
he looked at the woman lying next to him
her arm curled around his waist
a serene look on her face,
oblivious to his turmoil
unaware that sea was calling him
torn between the two,
he felt helpless
like watching sand slip through fingers
a heavy weight keeping him anchored
while his soul was writhing
for the salt spray on his face
the breeze in his hair
and the cyan expanse around him
away from the quotidian caterwauling
into the serene tranquility
and the porpoises,
Oh the porpoises!
beckoning him and enticing him.
gradually he was like the living dead
she noticed the faraway vacant look in his eyes,
his withdrawal and his silence
she did not want to live
with the shell of the man she loved
so, she released him
to go back in the arms of his first love
The sea.
How lovely!
Like a dream written in a careful hand!
‘…cyan expanse…’ being particularly triumphant.
Well done.

Wowwwwwww…a bittersweet love story. I love all of this, especially the ending. And also “cyan expanse”. By the way, I cooked a curry–and thought of you, knowing it could not equal your expertise 🙂

So love lorn…That split between duty and longing. I can absolutely relate. While I enjoy my job. My longing to be a full-time writer and illustrator..sharing all my stories and artwork with the world truly fills me with immense happiness. I feel like I’m constantly having to turn off my natural creative flow and sometimes it breaks my heart and makes my soul weep. I remind myself that I’m working on it and find joy in the moments that I get to share in the creativity, imagination, and wonder of the kids I work with and all of you here in the blogosphere. Thank you for such another wonderfully moving piece Punam my dear! 🤗 💞

Thank you so much, my dear Jenna! The tug of war between what we have to and what we love to, is something that we all have to deal with. We keep striving to find a balance just as you have mentioned. I am grateful that you shared your thoughts. 🤗💞

I forgot to add that it speaks a timeless truth or two about how we so often must sacrifice being with those we love in order to let them have the best lives. So tragic.

Hello dear Punam! I’m catching up and found this beautiful love story. Your phrasing and rhythm work so well to build up the story – their love for each is so obvious as is the inherent-ness of sacrifice in the love story.
I hope you and your husband can be together as the new year approaches. I’m looking forward to reading more of your heartfelt poetry in the new year. May 2020 bring you and your family much peace, love and laughter! ❤️❤️

My dear friend. I don’t mean to intrude, but I did want a chance to wish you a very happy start to 2020, and let you know they I’ve missed your poetry and your friendship. You’ve been in my thoughts.
I just saw this poem in coming to your blog to check in to make sure I hadn’t missed your return. It was a treat to see there was this gorgeous poem I must have somehow missed back in December. I was enthralled by it, the empathy you felt for this feeling of being torn between land and sea… the feelings that this must bring, for both of you (if I’m reading correctly between the lines).
Anyway, a big hi from me, and know I’m sending you love and hugs and many many well wishes from my corner of the world to yours ❤️❤️❤️

My dearest Rachel, you are not intruding at all! The trouble with taking a long break is that you want to resume writing but don’t know from where to start. And I want to read all that I missed of my favourite bloggers…which does seem daunting.
I have lots of drafts lying in my phone but I can’t decide which one to post! Hopefully I will post something today.
Thank you so much for your wishes. May you too have a good 2020.
When I tell my family and friends about the bond I share with my blogging friends, they find it hard to believe! Your love and hugs gratefully received and sent back to you manifold. You are a gem, Rachel. ❤️❤️❤️

Awww, how seeing this message made me smile!!! And I’ve just seen you have posted something too which is an absolute treat! Can you do me a favour, and not feel obligated to catch up on my posts please? I haven’t been as active on WordPress either, and it can feel daunting trying to keep up with everyone.
Wonderful to hear from you, my gorgeous friend ❤️❤️
