My Life a Conundrum

“What do you do the whole day?”

Is a refrain I often hear

As if staying at home, I just while time away

Which is such a non sequitur!

“You are free the entire day!”

Exclaims my little one indignantly,

“And I have to study throughout the day!”

Is what I am told incessantly.

“Look up these papers will you?”

Calls up hubby from his work

And in case I am unable to do,

The job of a dutiful clerk

“You had the complete day to play finder!”

Is his quick, witty rejoinder.

This whole day that I am free

Starts at 6 am and ends at 12.30 am.

With two half hour breaks for me

To disrupt the continuous tedium.

When you are cook, tutor, driver washerwoman,

Nurse and occasionally maid

You wish for the powers of a superwoman,

To tackle all the chores for which you are never paid!

From morn till night

Like millions of people worldwide

I toil at my job diligently

The house is clean, there’s food on the table

The children brought up well

The finances are all stable.

Yet why am I stuck with mislabel

As if I am differently able!

So now to the query, “What do you do?”

I have a smart rejoinder,

With a jaunty toss of my head

I say, “Oh! I am a freelance writer!”

Theirs eyes go wide and wisely they nod their head

Now you all will somewhat agree

This is no mean feat by any degree

It may be a motley group of followers

But why should I tell

Let them think I hobnob with scholars

And that I have a faithful clientele!

(A few days ago Robyn had written a post, I so identified with, and I had told her I would dig out this old post for her! So Robyn this is for you, me and other “homemakers“!)

    1. Thanks a lot, dear Z! I am no superwoman…as ordinary as the rest! When I wrote this, a mere 5 school mates were following me. Lol
Now of course, I hobnob with some of the best bloggers! πŸ˜„β€οΈ

  2. smart rejoinder and very well written … parenting is a 24/7 job with no pay or perks … except healthy happy kids ❀
I've written a poem "influencers" about people projecting their 'stuff' onto us but not posted it as I thought it was just me but maybe it's everyone!

  3. Brilliant……… There will be so many who would resonate with this…….being at home does not mean what you do is any less important than others …..infact kids and husbands can do their work peacefully only because homemakers take care of all other responsibilities……. respect πŸ™πŸ™

    1. Thanks a lot, dear Sakshu! Some of us don’t take up a job out of family compulsions, others don’t because they don’t have to! One doesn’t take up a job to prove one’s credentials nor to prove a point. And we all are working! You are so right about providing the right atmosphere for the rest of the family. πŸ™πŸΌ

  4. Well, if you want my two cents, I think you are superwoman! Raising and prioritizing children and the home is a hugely undervalued occupation, I love the way you have written this, with gusto and passion. It’s outstanding ❀️❀️

    1. Wrote this with gusto and passion because a friend was bemoaning the fact that no one takes her seriously because she is a ‘homemaker’! No one has a right to judge another person on the basis of their ‘job’! I am glad you enjoyed it. Thanks a lot, dear. ❀️❀️

  5. I love the irony of your getting more respect for freelance writing than for homemaking. My mother was for 35 years the CEO of a housing company. She quite seriously told me that the most important thing she had done in her life was raise my brothers and me. When I consider how much responsibility there is in making a home for people and raising them, I would be amazed had she said anything different than that.

    1. Well, that’s life, isn’t it? If your work is not earning you hard cash, it is not worthy!
      Your mom is absolutely right.
You know me, it doesn’t bother me one whit what people think! I have the luxury of doing what I want to and I am grateful for it.

  6. The curious thing is — if people were sane — they would value loving their work over merely being compensated for it. But we humans — all too often, we think money is everything.

Indeed, you are among the most independent, thinks-for-herself people I know.

    1. I come across so many young people who bemoan the fact that they hate their job but are continuing with it because the money is decent! ( they will never admit it is more than they deserve!) The irony is they studied hard to land that job! Their entire student life focused on that!
Lol Paul! I have been told I am too laidback and lack ambition and drive! I often wonder drive for what…πŸ€”
