Everyday spookiness

Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a poem about something mysterious and spooky! Your poem could be about something that is mysterious and spooky in a bad way (like a witch), or mysterious and spooky in a good way (possibly also like a witch? It depends on the witch, I guess!) Or just the everyday, mysterious, spooky quality of being alive.

Everyday spookiness

The silence is spookily sinister

I get up with a start only to realise

I had fallen asleep wearing my headphones

with the noise cancellation on.

A loud pop followed by another

makes me jump out of my skin

I dash towards the sound

only to see that the eggs

I had kept for boiling have popped

as the water had completely evaporated!

Creeeaak, creeaak in the middle of the night

I keep my book of horror stories down

heart pounding loudly

I tiptoe out of the room

to find the window I had opened in the morning

I had forgotten to shut in the evening.

As I return to my room

the phone rings shrilly, then goes dead

the hair on my nape prickle, I shudder

and try to shake off the strange feeling.

Then suddenly a stray dog

starts howling in the streets

I feel someone has just walked over my grave

and slump on the floor unable to take it anymore.
